Mr. Yin Gefei Moderates CEO Talks Forum of EUCCC

On 19 August 2016, The European Union Chamber of Commerce (EUCCC) in China hosted the CEO Talks: CSR vs. Profit forum in Shanghai. Mr. Yin Gefei, Chief Expert of GoldenBee CSR Consulting was invited to attend this forum. More than 40 people come from membership companies and non-membership companies of EUCCC and other service organizations joined this forum.

Mr. Roy Zhang, Chairperson of the CSR Forum Shanghai and the General Manager of UTC social responsibility delivered the opening speech; in particularly, he mentioned the three key elements for overcoming the challenge of sustainable development are “trust, sustainable and innovation”. Mr. Mats Harbon, Executive Director of Scania China Strategic Office made another speech about the release of white paper on behalf of membership countries of EUCCC. He reviewed the significant changing of China society towards the awareness of CSR since the last 15 years China has become the member of WTO, as well as how EUCCC push those membership enterprise to combine practices with the value of CSR by exploiting the cross-field collaborative. He affirmed the positive influence of Chinese government in terms of promoting the development of CSR, also stated that the 13th Five-Year Plan of China has conformed to include the concepts of sustainable development, and each unit are calling to contribute to reach this target.

Later on, during the section of CEO Talks, Mr. Mats Harbon identified himself as the decision maker of Scania China to explain his own understanding about the relationship between CSR and enterprises’ profitability. He put the profitability at the priority place and also regarded it as the guarantee of sustainable development; after making adequate profit, enterprise ought to help clients to be profitable as well, eventually this forms a pattern of cycle contains all of clients.

During the section of discussion, Mr. Yin Gefei, made congratulation to the 10th Anniversary White Paper. As a pioneer and promoter of CSR development in China, he introduced the four stages of CSR development have been through over the past five decades; meanwhile, he affirmed that CSR has gradually formed a five in one joint promotion configuration, which combine government-directed, sector-propelled, enterprise-implemented, social-involved and international cooperation.

There were a few questions about CSR have been debated deeply in the conversation between Mr. Yin and Mr. Mats Harbon; those questions were whether CRS should gain more profitability, does it conflict with the profitability in some cases. The participants also proposed some other questions; such as, how to measure the profitability of CSR, how to allocate resources between profitable and non-profitable projects and so on.

By the end of the forum, Mr. Yin made a summary related to the profitability of CSR; sometimes CSR is conformed to the profitability of enterprise, however they are conflicted each other under some circumstances. It’s easier to make a choice while they match together; nevertheless, if they are not conformed each other and under the condition that is out of the range of legislation, if adapt a long term strategic thinking and mix CSR into the value of enterprises, the results would be benefiting the sustainable development of society and achieving the sustainable operation through the responsible competiveness, eventually the conflicts will be solved.
